Click speed test
How many times can you click in a second? Pick a length, then click the box as fast as you can. The clock starts on your first click, so none of your reaction time is counted against you. No ads, no sign-up, nothing to install.
What the number means
Clicks per second is just clicks divided by seconds, which makes it easy to compare and easy to misread. Two things move it more than skill does: the length of the test, because nobody sustains a one-second burst for a minute, and the input device, because two thumbs on a touchscreen alternate in a way one finger on a mouse button cannot. Compare like with like or the comparison means nothing.
Rough bands for a 5-second test with a mouse, which is the common default:
| CPS | Where that sits |
|---|---|
| under 4 | Unhurried, or a trackpad. Perfectly normal for ordinary use. |
| 4 – 6 | Comfortable steady clicking, one finger. |
| 6 – 8 | The middle of the distribution. Most people who try hard land here. |
| 8 – 10 | Fast. Usually a light-switch mouse and a practised finger. |
| 10 – 14 | Almost always a technique — jitter or butterfly clicking, not ordinary clicks. |
| over 14 | Drag clicking, a mouse with a faulty or double-firing switch, or software. |
These are approximate, and anyone quoting an exact global average is inventing it — there is no register of everybody’s clicks. Treat them as a sense of scale, not a scoreboard.
Clicking faster, and the part nobody mentions
The techniques people use to push past ordinary clicking are real: jitter clicking tenses the forearm so the tremor drives the button, butterfly clicking alternates two fingers on one button, and drag clicking pulls a fingertip across the button so friction triggers it many times.
They also all work by doing something repetitive and slightly violent to a hand and forearm you would like to keep. Jitter clicking in particular is deliberate sustained tension in exactly the tissue that repetitive strain injury affects. It is worth knowing that before chasing a number: a personal best on a click test is not worth a wrist that hurts in six months, and that trade catches people who are convinced it will not.
If you want the clicks made for you
Most people who measure their click speed are not really curious about the number — they have something that needs clicking a few thousand times and are working out whether to do it by hand. That is a different tool.
Macronaut is a free auto clicker for Windows. It opens on a plain screen: how often to click, which button, how many times, Start. It is a single 78 MB file with no installer and no account, and the auto-clicker half of it is free permanently.
Converting a CPS score into the interval Macronaut asks for is just dividing into 1000:
| Clicks per second | Interval to type | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 CPS | 1000 ms | Once a second — keeping a session awake. |
| 2 CPS | 500 ms | Comfortable, obviously deliberate. |
| 5 CPS | 200 ms | About as fast as an unhurried person. |
| 10 CPS | 100 ms | Faster than most people manage by hand. |
| 20 CPS | 50 ms | Clearly not a person, and enough to overwhelm some apps. |
| 100 CPS | 10 ms | Possible, rarely useful, and often dropped by the target. |
A very short interval is not automatically better. The program on the other end has to keep up, and many stop responding to the extra clicks long before the mouse does.
Windows will say “Windows protected your PC” the first time you run it. It says that about any program without a signing certificate — click More info, then Run anyway.
A word about games
Plenty of people arrive at a click test because of a game. Worth saying plainly: many online games forbid automation and will suspend an account for it, and that is true of every auto clicker, not just this one. Read the rules of the game you are playing and make your own decision. Idle games, single-player games and ordinary desktop drudgery are a different question entirely.
Questions
Does clicking here send anything anywhere?
No. The test is a few dozen lines of JavaScript in this page. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and there are no third-party scripts on this page at all. Your best score is kept in your own browser’s local storage and never leaves it.
Why does my best score not survive?
It is stored per browser and per device, in local storage. A private window, a different browser, or clearing site data all start it fresh.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes — once the box has focus, Space and Enter count as clicks. That measures something slightly different, since a keyboard repeats differently from a mouse button, but the test does not care.
Is 10 seconds or 100 seconds the “real” test?
Neither is more real. Short tests measure peak speed, long tests measure endurance, and they answer different questions. The one thing that matters is comparing scores at the same length.
